The Million Dollar Theatre appears in the 1982 sci-fi film Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott. The theatre's exterior and brightly lit marquee appear in several scenes as part of the moody backdrop for Scott's dystopian future world.
The theatre, located at 307 S. Broadway in Downtown LA, is one of the first movie palaces built in the U.S, opening in February 1918. It was designed and built by businessman Sidney Patrick Grauman and architect/engineer Albert Carey Martin. Sculptor Joseph Jacinto Mora was responsible for the elaborate Spanish Colonial Revival exterior.
One of the working titles for the film was "Mechanismo", which was quickly rejected by the producers. The name “Blade Runner” was suggested by screenwriter Hampton Fancher, who owned a copy of the William Burroughs’s 1979 novella. To avoid unwanted legal issues, the filmmakers bought the rights to the title. The leading man was also under debate early on. Ridley Scott originally cast Dustin Hoffman as Deckard, but Hoffman left the role, citing 'artistic differences', following failed requests for script rewrites.
