The Tate Modern is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the world. It is based in the former Bankside Power Station, in the Bankside area of the London Borough of Southwark. The Power Station was originally designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and closed in 1981. In 1995 Herzog & de Meuron won the competition to design the new Tate Modern gallery. The conversion was completed in 2000.
